A3
Our A3 speaker is based on an Altec Lansing commercial cinema speaker launched in 1983; the A6, which formed part of the iconic 'Voice of the Theatre' (VOTT) range. The reason our speaker is called the A3 is because it is a half scale replica of the A6.
Heritage
This image is taken from the 1983 Altec Lansing Voice of the Theatre. You can see the A3 (third from right) along with the iconic A7 and A8 amongst others.
Sound
The A3's have a very natural, unforced sound, which is likely due to a combination of a high sensitivity 8" mid/bass driver in a reasonably large enclosure and a compression driver / horn combo.
Additionally, we've tuned the speaker to have a flat frequency response, as you want you to listen to the music, not the speaker :)
Domestic
In a domestic setting the A3 sits on 4 classic hairpin legs to ensure the 'acoustic centre' is at the correct height when sitting (around 90cm).

Materials
We only use high grade Baltic Birch Plywood in our speakers. 18mm thick with 13 plys. It's a beautiful material, stiff yet relatively light and looks fantastic.
Crossover Components
The A3's use high grade component, including woofers and passive radiators for the highly respected SB Acoustics and 1" compression driver from the world famous BMS company.
Horn
The use of a horn and compression driver to cover the high frequencies is standard in PA, but not often seen in domestic hifi.
This is despite the fact it has many benefits, including highly controlled directivity, high efficiency and excellent transient response.
Commercial
In a commercial setting the A3 will likely be ceiling mounted in a horizontal configuration with underhung horn.
